mini-conversations

Kaia: Mommy, can we play dolls?
Mommy: Sure, where are we playing?
K: Well.....mommy, can we BE the dolls?
M: (Grinning) Sure, where are we playing?
K: Okay, I'll be the doll that's a fairy. You be the doll that's the fairy's mommy. So...you are a fairy, too. Because you have to be a fairy to be a fairy mommy.
M: MMM...very likely. Let's go be fairies.

[I love living in a world where I get to be a fairy with my little ones!]

Brennan: Mom, can I take this [showing me 'Stuart Little' book] for show and tell?
Mom: Of course.
B: Mom, E.B. White is my favorite author right now.
M: Good, son. Tell me why...

[Note: I Gave him that book for Christmas :)! Yay! Success]

A couple of weeks ago Brennan chose to take a singing Hannah Montana doll to show and tell. This caused me to question my intentions to allow them the freedom to be what and who they are without trying to fit into "normal". Here's Brennan at a brand new school walking into a first grade class with a doll. That sings. HMMMMMM. I didn't hear anything else about it until:

Shopping for backpacks 4 days ago:
Brennan: Mom, can I please get the Hannah Montana backpack?
Mom: Get the backpack on sale. If I have to buy two backpacks, I am not spending more than 10 bucks on either one.
B: Mom, here's a blue one (still H.M.) on sale!
Kaia: (finding a pink camouflage one) I got mine!
B: Mom, I want this one!
M: Brennan, I don't care which one you pick; but, some kids might tease you a bit if you have that. Are you going to be okay with that? Will you be able to say "I don't care what you think"?
B: Oh, don't worry mom. The kids aren't allowed to laugh at me anymore. They'll go to the principal's office.
M: What?! Anymore? What happened?
B: When I took the doll last week. They laughed and the teacher told them that the next person that laughed at me would have to go to the principal's office. So, don't worry mom. They won't laugh.

[WHAT a way to find out about this! I SWEAR I talk to them every day about what is going on and I ask for specifics from their days! Argghhhh! But, he was sincerely unruffled. So, I'll take a cue from him since it's about him!]

Kaia: Mom, when I grow up can I be a Mermaid?
Mom: I'm not sure, Kaia. How do you think you could do that?
Kaia: Well, what if I become a rockstar when I am 16 and then I become a Mermaid when I am 22. Then I will have to find a Merman to marry. And, we will live in the ocean. I'll have to drink the magic potion, Mom.
M: Oh....is the magic potion available? Where will you find it?
K: I'll find it because I'll be a rockstar first. Rockstars get lots of potions (oh, if only you knew, little cub!). But, Mom? You will have to drink some potion too, okay? Because I will be too sad if I live in the ocean without you. But, you can come too and live with me and my husband.
M: Kaia, I appreciate having options. I promise that if you find a potion, I will consider living in the ocean with you.

Kaia in my room putting on her make-up for the day...

Kaia: Mom, can I wear one of your bras?
Mom: No. Why?
K: Because then I can pretend to have big boobies like you.
M: Hmmm...No. Not so much, Kaia.
K: Why, mom? Don't you like to have big boobies?

Hmmmmmm..............

I love conversations with the kids! Good for Brennan for not caring what the other kids think. Hopefully that will stick with him throughout his life!

I love it. It's funny and very insightful to know what really goes on in out kids' heads!
