A sickly walk

Last Sunday, I decided to take Elise to urgent care. She'd been sick for a while, so I figured I better be responsible and make sure it wasn't bronchitis or strep or something. Plus, most of us were coming down with it, and I don't have health insurance...so, if I know what Elise has, I'll know if any of us should be worried...right?
Well, in addition, my car was apart. Which was a good thing, because it was getting fixed. But, the doctor's office is 4 1/2-5 miles away. But, I'm training to run a marathon. So, I can walk that...right?

Here's the email I wrote to Jennifer about it a couple of days after...

Cannot wait to hear how your training goes! Mine has gone to walking the past week because I got sick. But, I have kept walking! :) Yesterday I walked Elise to the doctor to stay up on being as fit as possible. Which was a good idea...right? Well, turns out that the doctor was about five miles away...each way. And, that it was sunny...but cold. And, the air here in Utah sucks! I mean, it's horrible here! Like L.A. in the 80s or something. There are times it literally makes my lungs burn. (NOT exaggerating) So, I didn't take into account that already having a sore throat and cough and mucus up the ying-yang (what is a ying-yang, anyway???) that walking in cold, 'inversion' air might be a little tough after a while. Nor did I realize that one of the tires on my bike trailer (that I used as a stroller because in a fit of housecleaning fury I gave my stroller to Kevin to take to his mom's house for use with the 'grandkids'...ARGGHHH!!!) was flat and that, while still able to be used...and better than trying to walk with or carry Elise for five miles each way...would make it harder to push. Yeah. Turns out. So, what's the score here? Sick. Check. Cold. Check. Five miles each way. Check. Flat tire. Check. No real stroller. Check.
TWICE I bought some flat tire repair in order to fix the flat (this was after stopping at two gas stations to fill up my little tire with air...that would proceed to leak right out...) and found that it wouldn't work with said tire. So, I now own two flat tire repairs that will be handily waiting for the next time a bike has a flat. (if you need one, let me know :)!)
Plus, I've got Elise all bundled up in her little ride...and every once in a while, I can hear her hacking, little cough rattling throughout her fragile body. (they seem so much more fragile when they are sick!) So, I plugged away. Realizing the farther I went that it was farther than I thought...and that the farther I went, the less chance that I would turn around. It took two hours to get there. It took 3 to get back. It took an hour of waiting in the waiting room to get called back into one of the patient rooms. It took a half hour in a patient room to get 6 minutes with the doctor. It took 22 minutes of waiting to get the prescription for antibiotics for the ear infection and any potential bronchitis (she doesn't have bronchitis...but, she's had this damn cold for 12 days now; so I am ready to give her the antibiotic.)
What a day :). But, I did it. I couldn't help but laugh sometimes (which inevitably turned to coughing, but...you know ;)...) at the sheer ridiculousity of it all...Yes, I just threw down ridiculousity!

Oh that is too funny! I remember walking to the kids school (a couple of miles away) to pick them up and then walk them home. I figured all 3 would be fine on the walk home and was even proud of myself for packing them each a healthy snack. Well, about a third of the way home Chloe's diabetic body kicked in and she got low. So NOT fun to carry a 6 year old over a mile downhill. We made it home just in time for her to be good and lethargic. Next time I'll pack a less healthy snack and give her some sugar to walk home with.
